What is a CSA (community supported agriculture)?
CSA is a food system model that allows the customers (community) to more directly support their local farmers (agriculture). You, the customer, buy a "share" at the beginning of the season, purchasing in advance all your veggies for the year. This gives us, as farmers, peace of mind that our veggies will have a home every week and a boost of capital at a time when we’re normally running low on cash. Over the past five seasons we have come to truly love this relationship between the farm and the CSA members. The members get a more intimate relationship in eating locally as they learn to use all their veggies in a given week. As farmers, we’ve learned to share more about how/why/what we do in a way that we just can’t at a farmers market or farmstand. Our CSA is also small allowing us to get to know our different members easily and often.
How does it work?
Every week we harvest and pack up 7 different veggies and fruits for each share. You, as a member of the CSA, will come pick up your box of veggies from our onsite walk in cooler. You will receive a newsletter the day before reminding you to pick up as well as musings from the farm, veggies to expect in your share and recipe ideas. The share is comprised of the best of what’s in season that week and you will have the ability to swap out an item if necessary every week. You pay $35/week for a box that’s true value is about $50 depending on the time of year and exact veggies in it every week.
CSA options:
This is our pre-season share- you’ll receive 2 boxes of microgreens a week starting the weekend of April 4th, until the weekend of May 23rd- 8 weeks total.
Full season all the good stuff share: Starting the weekend of May 29th and ending the weekend of October 10th (20 weeks total), this is the full beautiful season CSA where you will get to enjoy sugar snap peas, carrots, beets, garlic, broccolini, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, green beans, cucumbers, melons, greens, winter squash and more. It’s a great experience to see the full offerings that a season provides. 7 items a week, $700 for the full 20 weeks.
We offer a six week end to the season CSA that will start the weekend of Oct 17th and end the weekend of November 21st (weekend before Thanksgiving). This share is full of our sweet potatoes, microgreens, radicchio, winter squash, salad greens, and root veggies. 7 items a week, $210 for the full 6 weeks.
The regular season with the fall season: All the options described above so that you have 26 weeks of continuous veggies. May 29th to November 21st. 7 veggies every week.
Please note this does not include the microgreens shares in April and May!
Finally, we would love to be able to offer as much of our shares as there’s need for on a sliding scale basis, unfortunately at this point we have a bottom line too, so we are offering a few spots this season sliding scale. If you, however, are passionate about as many members of your community getting the good produce we grow we would love to have you sponsor part or all of someone else’s CSA, obviously only if this is within your means. If this resonates with you or you would like to have a more in depth conversation, drop us a line! If you want to donate a different amount than $20 (any amount is legit) send us an email: graciesgreensvashon@gmail.com
